Party calls for arrest and prosecution of those responsible, insists political violence will not silence voters.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned an alleged attack on the convoy of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Calabar, Cross River State, describing the incident as a threat to democratic participation.

In a statement signed by the National Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Dr Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, the party disclosed that the incident occurred on Thursday, adding that no member of Obi’s delegation was injured, although one of the vehicles in the convoy was reportedly ambushed.

The NDC said the Calabar incident followed an earlier alleged attack on Obi’s convoy in Benue State, where the party claimed that a mob mounted a roadblock along the Makurdi-Gboko Federal Highway, near the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi.

The party maintained that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to campaign, associate and participate in political activities without intimidation or violence.

It called on the Cross River State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure their prosecution.

The NDC also warned that silence or inaction by authorities could encourage further acts of political violence.

Reaffirming its commitment to the electoral process, the party declared that the alleged attack would not discourage Obi or its supporters from participating in the 2027 general elections.

The party insisted that political power should be determined by the free choice of voters rather than threats, intimidation or violence.
