Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has announced plans to intensify efforts against individuals described as “fake pastors” accused of exploiting vulnerable residents through deceptive religious practices and false promises.

The governor made the statement during a public engagement in the state, where he expressed concern over the growing activities of self-acclaimed spiritual leaders allegedly taking advantage of people facing economic hardship, health challenges, and personal difficulties.

Soludo said the state government would no longer tolerate fraudulent religious activities that manipulate citizens in the name of faith. According to him, some individuals posing as pastors and prophets have turned religious centers into avenues for financial exploitation and criminal practices.

He stated that the government’s actions would focus on protecting residents from deception while ensuring that legitimate religious worship and freedom of religion remain respected under the law. The governor stressed that the initiative was not directed at Christianity or any recognized faith but at individuals using religion as a cover for illegal activities.

The Anambra State Government has in recent months increased monitoring of activities linked to native doctors, spiritualists, and self-styled religious leaders accused of promoting practices connected to fraud, ritual crimes, and exploitation. Authorities have argued that some operators encourage criminal behavior by promising wealth and supernatural success through unlawful means.

Soludo noted that vulnerable youths are often targeted by such individuals, who allegedly convince them to seek quick riches or miraculous solutions instead of lawful means of livelihood. He warned that the spread of deceptive religious practices poses social and moral dangers to communities across the state.

The governor said security agencies and relevant state authorities would work together to identify and investigate suspected fraudulent religious centers. He added that any individual found guilty of criminal conduct under the guise of religious activity would face prosecution according to the law.

According to Soludo, the state government remains committed to restoring public confidence in genuine religious institutions while preventing exploitation and abuse. He urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to people making unrealistic promises in exchange for money or loyalty.

The announcement has generated reactions from religious groups, community leaders, and residents within Anambra State. While some citizens welcomed the move as necessary to curb exploitation and criminality, others cautioned that the exercise should be carried out carefully to avoid targeting innocent religious leaders.

Several church leaders in the state also called for fairness and due process in implementing the crackdown. They emphasized the need to distinguish between legitimate religious ministries and individuals involved in fraudulent activities.
Analysts say Soludo’s latest comments reflect broader concerns in parts of Nigeria over the rise of controversial spiritual movements and the influence of self-proclaimed pastors and prophets. Cases involving alleged fraud, staged miracles, and exploitation by religious figures have repeatedly attracted national attention in recent years.

The governor has consistently advocated for social reforms aimed at promoting responsible behavior, public safety, and economic productivity in Anambra State. His administration has also launched campaigns against criminal activities, drug abuse, and practices believed to encourage insecurity.

Observers believe the crackdown could lead to increased scrutiny of religious and spiritual organizations operating across the state. Legal experts, however, note that any enforcement actions must comply with constitutional protections regarding freedom of worship and association.

Soludo reaffirmed that the objective of the initiative is to protect citizens and maintain public order rather than interfere with lawful religious practices. He urged residents to support the government’s efforts by reporting suspicious activities linked to fraud or exploitation.

The development is expected to remain a major topic of discussion among religious communities and civil society groups as the state government begins implementing the proposed measures against alleged fraudulent spiritual operators.
