The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has responded to recent remarks attributed to Governor Douye Diri concerning the political strength of incumbency ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that no government can withstand the collective will of the people.
In a statement issued on May 24, 2026, by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP said political history in Nigeria has shown that incumbency alone is not enough to secure electoral victory without broad grassroots support.
The reaction followed comments credited to Governor Diri suggesting that opposition parties in Bayelsa would soon “learn the game of incumbency” as preparations for the next general elections begin to gather momentum.
Responding to the remarks, the PDP said while the governor is entitled to his political views, democratic power ultimately rests with the electorate and not with those occupying political office.
The party maintained that the determination of citizens seeking change, justice, and effective leadership has repeatedly overcome the influence of incumbency in different parts of the country.
According to the statement, the PDP remains strongly connected to the people of Bayelsa State through years of political participation, development efforts, and what it described as shared sacrifices with the people of the state.
The party declared that its relationship with Bayelsans was built on long-standing engagement with communities across the state and a commitment to the aspirations of the Ijaw people and residents of Bayelsa generally.
It added that its political strength does not come from holding public office but from support among grassroots groups including youths, women, elders, workers, and ordinary citizens.
The PDP said these groups continue to identify with the ideals and direction of the party despite the changing political environment in the state.
The statement further noted that the Bayelsa PDP leadership under Hon. Barr. Alabh George Turnah remains united and committed to building what it described as a broad-based political movement rooted in inclusiveness, fairness, representation, and service delivery.
The party also urged residents of the state not to feel intimidated by political statements portraying incumbency as unbeatable.
According to the PDP, democracy belongs to the people and elections are decided by voters through their collective voices and convictions rather than by those currently in government.
The opposition party expressed confidence that Bayelsans would continue to support what it called a credible political platform that has consistently represented their interests and aspirations.
The statement emphasized that the PDP remains committed to political participation and development in Bayelsa State as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually intensify.
Political activities in Bayelsa have continued to attract attention in recent months as parties position themselves ahead of future contests in the oil-rich Niger Delta state.
Governor Douye Diri, who currently leads the state government, has remained a central figure in Bayelsa politics, while opposition parties continue efforts to strengthen their structures and expand support across the state.
The latest exchange between the PDP and the governor reflects the growing political tension and early alignments expected ahead of the next election cycle.
Observers say debates over incumbency, grassroots support, and voter influence are likely to remain key themes as political actors begin mobilizing supporters for future campaigns.
The PDP concluded its statement by reiterating its confidence in the people of Bayelsa and insisting that democratic power ultimately lies with citizens rather than political office holders.
