Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over the alleged unauthorized disclosure of information from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database.

Atiku called for a thorough investigation into the matter, stressing the importance of protecting sensitive voter information and maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system. He said any breach involving electoral data should be treated with utmost seriousness because of its potential implications for privacy, security, and the credibility of future elections.

According to the former vice president, the integrity of voter registration records is a critical component of democratic governance. He noted that Nigerians must be assured that personal information submitted during the voter registration process is adequately protected from unauthorized access or misuse.

Atiku expressed concern that reports of data exposure, if confirmed, could undermine trust in electoral institutions and raise questions about the security of information held by public agencies. He urged relevant authorities to provide clarity on the situation and take immediate steps to address any vulnerabilities that may exist within the system.

The former vice president emphasized the need for transparency in handling the issue, arguing that citizens deserve a full explanation regarding how the information was allegedly disclosed and what measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He also called on INEC and other responsible agencies to strengthen data protection mechanisms and cybersecurity safeguards around electoral databases. According to him, protecting voter information is essential not only for individual privacy but also for preserving confidence in the democratic process.

The concern comes amid growing global attention to data privacy and cybersecurity, particularly in relation to government databases and election-related systems. Experts have repeatedly warned that unauthorized access to sensitive information can expose individuals to risks such as identity theft, fraud, and other forms of misuse.

INEC’s Continuous Voter Registration database contains information collected from eligible voters during registration exercises conducted across the country. The database plays a key role in maintaining the national voter register used during elections.

Political observers note that issues involving electoral data security often attract significant public attention because of their potential impact on election administration and voter confidence. They stress that swift investigations and clear communication from authorities are essential whenever concerns about data protection arise.

Atiku reiterated that electoral institutions must remain vigilant in safeguarding the information entrusted to them by citizens. He added that maintaining robust security standards is necessary to ensure the credibility and reliability of Nigeria’s electoral framework.

As discussions continue, stakeholders are expected to monitor responses from INEC and relevant agencies regarding the allegations. The issue has renewed calls for stronger cybersecurity measures and improved data protection practices within public institutions responsible for managing sensitive information.

The former vice president maintained that public trust in democratic institutions depends on accountability, transparency, and the effective protection of citizens’ personal data. He urged authorities to take all necessary actions to reassure Nigerians that the integrity of the voter registration system remains secure.
