The transition process within the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide gathered momentum on Tuesday as the National President, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, received Comrade Endoro Oweikeye Path, a prominent member of the IYC Western Zone, at his office in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The meeting took place at the Ijaw House and centered on leadership succession as the tenure of the current National Executive Council approaches its end.
Comrade Ndoro the leading aspirant of the forthcoming IYC presidential election visited the National President to formally inform him of his decision to seek the office of National President of the IYC Worldwide. His declaration comes as the current administration prepares to conclude its mandate in the middle of the year, setting the stage for a new round of elections within the organization.
According to information from the meeting, Comrade Ndoro explained that his visit was driven by respect for constituted authority and adherence to established traditions within the IYC. He stated that it was important to officially notify the current leadership of his intention before commencing broader consultations and campaign activities.
The Ijaw Youth Council is regarded as one of the most influential youth organizations in Africa, representing the interests of Ijaw youths across Nigeria and beyond. As a result, transitions in its leadership often attract attention from stakeholders within the region and the wider political space.
In his response, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr expressed appreciation to Comrade Ndoro for the courtesy visit and the manner in which he declared his ambition. He described the move as a demonstration of respect for the office of the National President and the institutional processes of the council.
Sir Lokpobiri assured his guest that the leadership of the IYC Worldwide is committed to upholding democratic principles throughout the forthcoming electoral process. He stated that his administration, working with members of the National Executive Council and relevant electoral bodies within the organization, would ensure that the next election is free, fair, and credible.
The National President emphasized that his priority as his tenure winds down is to leave behind a strong and united council. He noted that a transparent transition would help preserve the integrity of the IYC and strengthen its ability to advocate effectively for the Ijaw people.
He further explained that the council’s leadership has a responsibility to create a level playing field for all aspirants, regardless of zone or political alignment. According to him, this approach is essential for maintaining trust among members and preventing divisions that could weaken the organization.
Comrade Ndoro, who hails from the Western Zone of the IYC, is considered an experienced figure within the council, having participated in various activities and initiatives over the years. His aspiration is expected to add to what many observers believe will be a competitive contest for the top office.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for discussions on the broader state of the IYC, including ongoing projects and institutional reforms introduced under the current administration. Both men reportedly exchanged views on the need for continuity in areas such as youth development, capacity building, and engagement with government and community leaders.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr took Comrade Ndoro on a tour of the ongoing IYC Modern Secretariat Complex project. The project, located within the Ijaw House premises, is one of the flagship infrastructure initiatives of the current leadership.
The complex presently includes a modern conference center designed to host meetings and large gatherings. It also houses a training center aimed at building the skills and leadership capacity of Ijaw youths across different zones.
In addition, the facility features a workshop area intended to support vocational and entrepreneurial activities. The project is expected to serve as a permanent hub for administrative, educational, and developmental programs of the IYC.
The visit underscored the growing focus on leadership transition within the Ijaw Youth Council as the end of the current tenure draws closer. With declarations beginning to emerge, attention is now turning to the electoral process that will determine the next National President of the organization.
As preparations continue, stakeholders within the IYC are expected to monitor developments closely, with many emphasizing the importance of unity, transparency, and adherence to the council’s constitution throughout the transition period.
